London Transport
London Bus Stop Flags sold on ebay – Pre-war Style

Last updated 9 January 2010.

The original style of London Transport bus stop flag was composed of two flat enamelled steel plates mounted in a bronze frame.

The text accompanying each sign is the seller’s description (complete with spelling errors and unorthodox punctuation). Details of shipping, pick-up or delivery have been omitted. Any added notes are in italics. If a sign is marked as unsold (with a strike through the price), it is generally because the condition did not warrant the sellers starting bid, or the seller had it listed as for “Local pick-up only”.

THIS AUCTION IS FOR A VITREOUS ENAMEL FLAT LONDON TRANSPORT BUS STOP FLAG.  THIS FLAG WOULD HAVE EITHER HAD A METAL FRAME AND BEEN SCREWED TO THE SIDE OF A BUS SHELTER.  OR, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN "BACK TO BACK" WITH AN IDENTICAL PLATE (i.e. DOUBLE SIDED) AND MOUNTED WITHIN A METAL FRAME AND BOLTED TO THE TOP OF A METAL OR CONCRETE BUS STOP POST.  THIS FLAG IS 17.5 inches LONG BY 15.5 inches HIGH. NOT OBVIOUS FROM THE PHOTO IS THAT THERE ARE A SMALL NUMBER OF CHIPS TO THE ENAMEL WHICH HAVE BEEN SYMPATHETICALLY RESTORED WITH ENAMEL PAINT.  I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS STYLE OF BUS STOP FLAG WAS PROGRESSIVELY REPLACED BY THE "SELF-CLEANING" TYPE OF FLAG FROM THE LATE 50s EARLY 60s.  THIS EXAMPLE IS CLIPPED TO A PIECE OF HARDBOARD CARRYING PICTURE HANGERS, ENABLING IT TO BE HUNG FROM A PICTURE HOOK.  WITH PACKING, THIS ITEM WEIGHS ALMOST 4 KILOS.

This is an original London Transport bus stop sign from the 1950s and 1960s, bought by me at a London Transport sale in the old museum at Syon Park in 1973. It is in a stove enamel finish on thick steel plate (reverse side is plain black) measuring approx. eighteen inches square. It is very heavy, weighing nearly 6lbs or 2.4kg. It is in good condition, bearing in mind that it was in use for at least twenty years, with two small chips to the finish.

THIS IS A ORIGINAL EARLY ISSUE LONDON TRANSPORT BUS STOP. IT IS MADE OF STEEL ENAMELLED AND STILL HAS A GOOD COLOUR AND SHINE, AND IS MOUNTED INTO A BRONZE FRAME WHICH THEN FIXED TO A BIRMINGHAM GUILD CAST IRON POST AS ORIGINALLY USED BY THE LONDON GENERAL OMNIBUS COMPANY. IT MEASURES 54 X 45 X 2.5 CM, 60 CM INCLUDING SCREW FITTINGS. THERE IS SOME DAMAGE TO THE ENAMEL AT THE BOTTOM ON BOTH SIDES THIS WAS CAUSED BY CONDENSATION RUSTING THE STEEL INSIDE AND EXPANDING. THE STOP WAS STILL IN USE INTO THE 1990'S I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I OBTAINED IT FROM THE CONTRACTORS AT THE TIME, I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE IT CAME FROM THOUGH.
This is the less common rectangular style.

A very fine example of a LT Bus Stop Flag of the pre-Burnham design type era. It is an E3 type and comes complete with two of its original e-plates for routes 405B and 476. The screws holding the metal e-plate runners need easing so I have left them in place. All you experts out there will know its age but it must be 1950s or earlier?

This flag (numbered 28663) came from the Crawley area and was bought from Reigate Garage prior to its closure.

A totally original example of a brass framed bus stop flag with E plate runners in place.

Both sides appear to be in very good order, but it will require considerable cleaning.

It is just as removed from a post, presumably many years ago.

It is very heavy as it still has the threaded post brackets in place.

Old Enamel English Bus Stop Request Sign with fixings

This is an old English Bus Stop Request Sign with its original surrounding frame and fixings still attached.

The sign and frame measures 46cm (18") wide x 40cm (15.75") high and the bolts on the side measure 14cm (5.5") long. The threads are still in good condition, you just need the nuts to fix to the ends.

The sign is in good condition although one side does look better than the other as there is a patch of enamel missing on one side (see photo).

Please look at the photos to judge the quality of the item for yourself.

NOTE: This sign is double sided, there is a sign front and back.

You are looking and hopefully bidding on..
A early LONDON TRANSPORT (request) bus stop
I'm not sure how old it is but it's certainly more than 30 years old. I bought this from a Autojumble in Enfield over ten years ago (has been kept inside every since then). I was originally planning to place on own old concrete washing post in the garden! But i've still not got round to it after all these years and it really is too good and rare to hang outside all the time!
Both sides are nice and bright with only slight weathering which is too be expected for something this age. There are no chips to the enamel or rust and the surrounding framework and brackets are nice and secure. Please note when i purchased it there was no number plate beneath (as seen in photo) but the screws are there for you to add one on if you wish?
Also included is a pair of the correct size stainless steel nuts as needed to secure onto a post etc, which i purchased at the time.

Genuine London Transport bus stop sign in vitreous enamel (that is like glass and fired in a kiln)
It is of the pre-World War II type, being two flat enamel plates set in a gun metal (bronze) frame.
It is probably at least 60-70 years old. Condition is fantastic.
The frame is easily dismantled with an ordinary screw driver, to allow removal of one enamel plate, so you get two signs for the price of one. The bronze frame is untouched, but could be polished.

The sign can be mounted on a post or a wall using the two long bolts protruding from one end: they are threaded at the ends and the necessary nuts are provided.
Despite its age there is no corrosion.
The enamel is absolutely flawless and still has its full as-new gloss, as seen in the flash photo above. Both sides are 100% perfect.
